HOMOEOPATHY FOR THYROID DISORDERS

Thyroid is small gland situated in the midline and base of the neck. The gland produces thyroid hormones T4 (Tetraiodothyronine/Thyroxine) and T3 (Triiodothyronine) that are absolutely essential for maintaining harmony of various body functions. Thyroid hormones govern the speed of body’s chemical reaction and have positive influence on growth of an individual (mental and physical). Because thyroid hormones affect growth, development and many cellular processes, excess of thyroid hormones has widespread consequences on the body.

Thyroid Gland

Hyperthyroidism:

Increased secretion of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland in the body is called as hyperthyroidism.
Causes

The main cause is the entire gland is producing more hormones, this is seen in Grave’s disease.

Grave’s disease is actually an auto-immune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly starts attacking it’s own cells (in this case the thyroid gland) resulting in inflammation and enlargement of the gland (Goiter) and production of excess hormones. In case of Hot nodule, there is a particular solitary nodule in the gland which  producies more hormones; In Thyroiditis, there may also be multiple such nodules in the gland duevto Inflammation of the thyroid gland due to any other cause can also result in hyperthyroidism.

Symptoms

  • Weight loss despite normal or increased appetite
  • Palpitations (fast heart rate)
  • Heat intolerance
  • Nervousness
  • Insomnia
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Increased bowel movements
  • Light or absent menstrual periods
  • Fatigue
  • Tremors of hands and fingers
  • Irritability
  • Excessive perspiration
  • Muscle weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Hair loss
  • Staring gaze
  • Warm moist skin
  • Lump in the neck (Goiter)
Homoeopathic Treatment For Hypothyroidism
Medicines like Calcare phos, Calcarea carb, Lapis alb, Iodium, Thyroidinum, Spongia, Lycopus, Calcarea iod etc are often found indicated in cases of hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which body doesn't have sufficient thyroid hormone levels in the blood stream.  Since  the body's metabolism is managed by the thyroid hormones, persons suffering with hypothyroidism will have a slow metabolism.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism:
The symptoms of hypothyroidism mainly depend on the severity of the hormone deficiency and how long the decrease has been present. For most patients, the symptoms are mild and can often be confused with other problems. The symptoms may include the following:
  • Weakness
  • Hair loss
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Dry, rough pale skin
  • Coarse dry hair
  • Cold intolerance
  • Depression
  • Decreased concentration
  • Constipation
  • Irritability
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle aches
  • Memory loss
  • Abnormal menstrual cycle
  • Slowed heart rate
Causes of Hypothyroidism:

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is the  chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), a form of thyroid inflammation caused by damage to the thyroid tissue. Damage occurs because immune cells which usually fight off infection and colds attack the body's own thyroid tissue instead.
  • Autoimmune Diseases - You may be at risk for thyroiditis if you have other autoimmune diseases. Some examples of these autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis (the immune cells attack the joints), vitiligo (patches of skin lose their color and become white), Addison's disease (a disorder of the adrenal glands), and diabetes (the immune cells attack the pancreas which produces insulin).
  • Age - Hypothyroidism becomes increasingly common as we age, particularly in women. If you are older your thyroid may not provide enough thyroid hormones, thus resulting in hypothyroidism.
  • Surgery - Removal of a portion or all of the thyroid gland is another cause. If the total mass of thyroid producing cells left within the body are not enough to meet the needs of the body, the patient will develop hypothyroidism.
  • Radioactive iodine - If a patient has undergone radioactive iodine therapy to kill a portion of the thyroid,  either to prevent goiters from growing larger, or to prevent the production of too much of the hormone (Hyperthyroidism), too many cells can be damaged and the patient could become hypothyroid in couple of years following the therapy.
  • Secondary Hypothyroidism - There are some rare causes of hypothyroidism related to brain diseases, also called secondary hypothyroidism. Disorders of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus portions of the brain may cause thyroid hormone deficiency in addition to other hormonal imbalances.

HOMOEOPATHY FOR CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS, THORACIC SPONDYLOSIS AND LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS

Spinal osteoarthritis is a painful condition characterized by pain, stiffness, weak ness and numbness in the neck, chest and back. Spinal osteoarthritis is classified into cervical osteoarthritis/sponsylosis, thoracic osteoarthritis/sponsylosis and lumbar osteoarthritis/sponsylosis. Spondylosis condition is very painful which affects our day today life. Our spine is made up of a number of bones known as vertebrae. Between two consecutive vertebrae there is a cushion like substance called intervertebral disc. Spondylosis is a common degenerative condition of the intervertebral disc due to subsequent biochemical changes in the bones and soft tissues. This affects the normal spinal structure and function of the cervical (neck), thoracic (chest area), and lumbar (low back) spine. As biochemical changes transpire, collagen - a crucial structural element of the intervertebral disc is affected by the loss of water content which causes the discs to weaken and shrink in height escalating the risk for disc bulging and herniation. The cartilage covering joint surface erodes causing the spine’s ligaments to thicken and lose strength. In an effort to repair itself, the body forms bone spurs (osteophytes) and the joints enlarge causing osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease.

SPONDYLOSIS
Causes:
  • Congenital (from birth).
  • Heredity.
  • Sedentary life.
  • Fall or injury.
  • Trauma from carrying heavy loads, excessive dancing, violent exercises or gymnastics.
  • Wrong positions in sitting, standing or sleeping.
  • Aging.
  • Smoking.
  • Diseases of bones.
  • Drugs affecting bones.
Symptoms:

Cervical osteoarthritis/spondylosis

  • Pain, tenderness and stiffness in the neck, shoulders and arms
  • Weakness and numbness in the neck, shoulder, arms
  • Headaches at the back of head (cervical osteoarthritis/spondylosis)
  • Vertigo and loss of balance (cervical osteoarthritis/spondylosis)
  • Swallowing difficulty (cervical osteoarthritis/spondylosis)
