Hyperthermia will occur to the body due to extreme heat in
summer.
During the summer season three types of heat-related
illnesses present including heat stroke and heat exhaustion, heat cramps. Other
heat-related health problems include heat rash and sunburn, diarrhea,
dysentery, cholera, and vomiting.
Summer can bring heat waves with abnormal high temperatures
that last for days and at times weeks. This high temperatures and waves lay
people at risk of disease.
Heat stroke
Heat stroke is a type of hyperthermia, an abnormally
elevated body temperature associated with physical and neurological symptoms.
Heat stroke is a true medical emergency that can be fatal if not appropriately
and treated on time. The body usually generates heat as a result of metabolism,
and is usually able to dissipate the heat by either radiation of heat through
the skin or by evaporation of sweat. However, in extreme heat, high humidity,
or vigorous exertion under the sun, the body may not be able to dissipate the
heat and the body temperature rises, sometimes up to 106°F (41.1°C) or higher.
HEAT STROKE |
Risk population:
- Infants and children up to four years of age
- Older People (65 years of age)
- People who overwork physically during work exerting themselves under the sun
- People who are obese or overweight
Causes:
- Exposure to heat waves
- Dehydration
Symptoms of Heat stroke:
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Muscle cramps and aches
How to manage a heat stroke victim?
Heat stroke victims should receive immediate treatment to
avoid permanent organ damage.
- First action should be cool the victim.
- Get the victim to a shady area or under the tree
- Remove clothing
- Apply cool water to the skin, fan the victim to encourage sweating and evaporation, and place ice packs under armpits and groins. Monitor body temperature and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101-102°F (38.3-38.8°C). Then proper medical advice is to be taken thereafter.
Prevention of heat stroke
- The most important measures to prevent heat strokes are to avoid becoming dehydrated and to avoid vigorous physical activities in hot and humid weather.
- If the person has to perform physical activities in hot weather, he should drink plenty of fluids, but avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tea which may lead to dehydration.
- The body will need replenishment of electrolytes (such as sodium) as well as fluids if the person sweat excessively or perform vigorous activity in the sunlight for prolonged periods.
- Wear hats and light-colored, lightweight, loose clothes.
